California businesses and property owners often ask: "Which program should I apply for — BayREN or SoCalREN?" The answer depends on where your facility is located and what upgrades you're pursuing. This guide breaks down the key differences so you can apply to the right program and maximize your incentives.
What Is BayREN?
BayREN — the Bay Area Regional Energy Network — serves Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties. It's funded by California's investor-owned utilities and administered by a consortium of local governments. BayREN offers rebates and incentive programs for commercial buildings, multifamily properties, and public agencies in the nine-county Bay Area.
What Is SoCalREN?
SoCalREN — the Southern California Regional Energy Network — serves facilities in Southern California Edison and SoCalGas service territories, covering Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura, and surrounding counties. Like BayREN, it's ratepayer-funded and focuses on hard-to-reach commercial and public agency customers who may not be aware of available incentives.
How Do They Compare?
Both programs offer similar types of incentives — rebates for lighting upgrades, HVAC improvements, building envelope work, and more. The primary difference is geography: BayREN serves Northern California, SoCalREN serves Southern California. In some cases, facilities may qualify for both programs plus additional direct utility rebates, and stacking these incentives can result in $0-net-cost projects.
Which Program Should You Apply For?
Apply to the program that covers your utility territory. If you're served by PG&E in the Bay Area, BayREN is your primary path. If you're served by SCE or SoCalGas in Southern California, SoCalREN is your starting point. Enlighting Energy helps clients in both territories identify and apply to the right combination of programs.
